ABOUT LUCY
Born 1966 in Manchester, I grew up in the Lake District. I moved to Birmingham in 1985 to study Fine Art. Here I created construction sculptures incorporating bone and feather with wax and wood. These figurative sculptures were powerful and unnerving; they were named after the strong emotions they sought to evoke. In 1989 I sold several sculptures to Warner Brothers Studios for the set of the first Batman Movie.
In 2002, I graduated from the University of Central England with a Masters in Surface Design. This led to a renewed confidence, maturity and development of my artistic skills. During my studies I developed a distinctive style of drawing with intricate and labyrinth detail. Inspired by these drawings, I again began to work in 3D and developed my technical abilities.
From 2002 to 2012, I carved sculptures using ‘plaster of Paris’. This is a time-consuming technique, creating a smooth and sensual finish. My subject matter included birds, animals and primitive looking figures. My distinctive semi-abstract style reminiscent of artworks from Africa - I lived in Botswana for 2 years as a child and this experience has greatly influenced my work. Many of these pieces cast in bronze have been sold in art galleries and currently sold on-line with a gallery called Spiral bronze.
In 2016 I inherited a collection of animal bones from my mum which, along with bones from my own collection, I have used to create the “Ossa Forma” series of sculptures.
